You can get a rough idea of how much better the game looks in Digital Foundry and NX Gamer’s technical analysis videos. The enhanced version of Red Dead Redemption is a state-of-the-art upgrade. If you switch to Performance Mode, you get no change in frame rate and an immense loss in visual quality. The Xbox One consoles playing at their enhanced resolutions already produce an almost constant 30 fps. Red Dead was originally capped at 30 fps and that’s the best you can get from the enhanced version because the original code was not modified to remove the cap. Performance Mode displays a game at the 360’s original 720p and uses the additional processing power of the Xbox One consoles to boost frame rate up to the maximum allowed by the original game. Playing Red Dead in Performance Mode on either the One S or One X is not a good idea. It doesn’t happen often and it doesn’t happen at all on the One S. This results in a momentary hitch in frame pacing. Digital Foundry notes that an extra frame is sometimes added when frame rate dips on the One X. In addition to producing a smoother-playing game, the steady frame rate eliminates the screen tearing that was occasionally present in the original game.įrame rate drops for the enhanced version are shallow and brief. The Xbox 360 often fell well below this target while both the One S and One X stick to it almost all of the time. Playing in full 4K on the One X where almost all of this shimmering is eliminated is much preferred.įrame rate comparison Credit: Digital Foundryįrame rate is capped at 30 fps in all versions of the game. However, NX Gamer points out that the frequent shimmering along edges seen in the original is reduced but still noticeably present on the One S. In addition, the 1080p image is downsampled from the full 4K render which smooths edges and eliminates some lighting artifacts. Red Dead looks a lot better even if played on an Xbox One S where it displays at native 1080p (1920 X 1080), a substantial improvement over the original 720p. The real beauty of the game has been sitting there on disc all this time waiting to be revealed by technology that wasn’t available to the consumer in 2010. They knew that Red Dead seen on an Xbox 360 in 2010 didn’t come close to showing people what they had created. Imagine how the game’s artists felt when they were praised for the beauty of their work. Red Dead was widely praised for being an exceptionally good-looking game when it was first released. Remembering that Microsoft doesn’t modify the original code, Red Dead’s superior image quality is due to the effect the resolution boost has on the high quality assets Rockstar used in the original game. Red Dead stands out from a number of other Xbox 360 enhanced games in how good it looks. Both point out that the nine-fold increase in pixels from 720p to 4K makes an enormous difference when Red Dead is played on the One X.
